Argos sell general merchandise
and products for the home from over 700 stores throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland, online and over the telephone they
also own several brands including Bush, Chad Valley, Elizabeth Duke, Mikomi and Alba.
In the last financial year, Argos sales were £4.3
billion and they employ over 33,000 people.
Each year Argos serve over 130 million customers and 26% of sales are over the internet. The Argos catalogue website was the most visited high street retail website in the UK in 2008.
Along with Homebase they are part of the Home Retail group. Argos publishes catalogues twice a year and it is estimated that around two thirds of the UK population, have the Argos
catalogue at home.
Argos was originally founded by Richard Tompkins who set up green shield stamps and the first Argos catalogue shop opened
in 1973.
