The EHIC is a document which shows that the holder is entitled to free or reduced cost emergency medical
treatment only in state hospitals within the EU. The EHIC is NOT an alternative to travel insurance.
As it will not cover any private medical healthcare or the cost of things such as mountain rescue in ski resorts,
repatriation to the UK if you are seriously ill or lost or stolen property.
For these reasons,
it is important to have both an EHIC and a valid private travel insurance policy. Some insurers now insist
you hold an EHIC and many will waive the excess if you have one. The EHIC stands for European Health Insurance Card
and application forms can be picked up at post offices.
