Travel Insurance

The purpose of travel insurance is to give you protection against holiday cancellation and  medical problems and lost or damaged property. For example if you were taken seriously ill on your holiday and had to be flown back to the UK from the states the cost without travel insurance could be as high as £50,000 on an air ambulance and if you have paid £1000's for your holiday and have to cancel at the last minute due to illness or a family bereavement it is good to know you have not lost the lot.
Many travel insurance companies stop offering annual or single trip travel insurance once you reach the age of 65 so below you can see which travel insurance companies are still happy to offer you travel insurance company.

Types of Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance is normally categorised as "single trip travel insurance" or "annual or multi trip travel insurance"

Single trip is as the name suggests provides cover for a single trip while annual provides you with cover for trips over the course of a year. If you only intend to holiday once a year then single trip will be sufficent and cheaper but if you go away more frequently consider annual travel insurance as it should work out cheaper over the course of a year.

If i have  the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) do i need Travel Insurance?

The EHIC is a document which shows that the holder is entitled to free or reduced cost emergency medical treatment only in state hospitals within the EU.

The EHIC is NOT an alternative to travel insurance. As it will not cover any private medical healthcare or the cost of things such as mountain rescue in ski resorts, repatriation to the UK if you are seriously ill or lost or stolen property.

For these reasons, it is important to have both an EHIC and a valid private travel insurance policy. Some insurers now insist you hold an EHIC and many will waive the excess if you have one. The EHIC stands for European Health Insurance Card and application forms can be picked up at post offices.
